Terror of the Unnamed Foe
Mantiben is a country on the continent of Endirah. It stands out in Endirah for a number of reasons. For one, it is the only remaining country left in Endirah that has not been conquered by the Dark Army. This is due in part to the White Wall., which prevents anything from passing into Mantiben through the mortal realm; it is also due to the current stance of non-involvement in the fey wild, preventing the use of extra dimensions to go around the wall.
The other reason that Mantiben stands out is due to it’s system of government. Mantiben is divided into 8 counties, each county having a lord; the primary county is named after the capitol city of Tybar, and the lord who rules there is also king of Mantiben. Each lordship is filled by a Paladin of Pelor, but the passing of rule is not done through hereditary lines. Instead, each time a county needs a new lord, the council of clerics meet at the Prime Temple of Pelor in Tybar and they hold a private conclave. At this conclave a new lord is elected from the current paladins based on personal qualifications and distinguished service. This government is considered the most balanced, since the clerics serve the needs of the community and know their needs and wants. Since they cannot hold political office, they can remain impartial in the conclave without being clouded by ambition. Still, there have been a few notable exceptions of power plays and corruption within the conclave; including the warpriest Azmodar, who claimed Pelor had divinely inspired him to attain the rank of Paladin through his valorous battles. Also, Arch-cleric Heironeous, who unsuccessfully vied to establish Parzival the Ironfist on the throne, never disclosing that he was actually his brother.
The politics of Mantiben since the finishing of the White Wall. has been one of non-involvement. Though they do keep a standing army, they have never made attempts at combating the Dark Army, and have consistently denied appeals for aid from both dwarves and other human countries as the Dark Army approached their borders. Though this has allowed the nation to remain intact, it has also left them alone on the continent surrounded by enemies.
